FAQ

What is the CVRT?

The Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT) is a legally required annual test for commercial vehicles over one year old. It checks that your vehicle meets the basic safety and roadworthiness standards set by the RSA.

We test all commercial vehicle categories covered under the CVRT programme, including vans, trucks, trailers, buses, ambulances, and motor caravans.

Most commercial vehicles must be tested every year once they are over one year old. Motor caravans require a CVRT four years after first registration, then annually. Some fast tractors require testing every two years after year four.

You must bring valid photo ID (driver’s licence, passport, or public services card). You should also ensure the vehicle is clean, roadworthy, and that all loads are secured or removed before testing.

A standard CVRT test typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle type and condition. Larger vehicles or those requiring additional checks may take slightly longer.

If your vehicle fails, you’ll receive a detailed report explaining the issues. You must fix the defects and return for a re‑test. Re‑tests are usually quicker and focus only on the failed items.

Yes — if your vehicle passes, you will receive the official Certificate of Roadworthiness (CRW). This confirms your vehicle met the required safety standards on the day of the test.

You can book your CVRT test online through the official RSA booking system, selecting M9 CVRT as your preferred test centre. You can also contact us directly if you need help with booking or have questions.
